Gravel excavations in 1973 and 1992 produced a number of pools, creating an area of open water covering over 50 hectares. Limburgs Landschap vzw takes care of this magnificent nature reserve. Their work has continued to enhance the natural value of this area. Space has been created for richly forested wet and dry heaths, in addition to Nardetea grasslands. In this nature reserve, Konik ponies and Galloway cattle help to keep the vegetation under control. Peninsulas and shallow zones have been created along the northern section of the largest pool. An ideal biotope for birds and amphibians.
